Academy response to minimum pricing decision

Jul 18, 2013

The Government has confirmed it will not go ahead with minimum unit pricing. James Morris, Director of the Alcohol Academy responds here:

The Alcohol Academy exists to promote and support effective local alcohol harm reduction approaches. How effective local action is also depends on national level policy. Whilst cheap alcohol remains readily available in off-licenses and supermarkets, other approaches are fighting against a strong tide: the evidence shows price and availability are key determinants of harm.

We need to support and encourage a responsible on trade and address off-sales which have been largely responsible for a 70% rise in consumption over the last 4 decades. Minimum pricing is the best way to do this.
