Brief Interventions: Addressing commissioning and delivery issues

Dec 7, 2009

The Academy is currently organising a symposium for alcohol leads and commissioners to assess issues facing the effective delivery of brief intervention projects and possible responses.

The half-day symposium aims to consider the challenges in commissioning and delivering effective screening and brief interventions (SBI) projects, also known Identifcation and Brief Advice (IBA). Alcohol leads have identified a number of issues for effectively delivering brief interventions in various key settings.

A key challenge appears that SBI projects are frequently sidetracked into supporting dependent drinkers, particualrly where wider treatment care pathways and capacity is limited. Further issues may include demanding practitioner workloads, under-recognition of alcohol misuse (particualrly non-dependent) and wider commissioning and capacity barriers.

The symposium aims to consider the issues and develop responses to ensure smart commissioning of SBI projects within wider treatment pathways. This supports the Academy's aim of developing knowledge, skills and excellence for alcohol coordinators, commissioners and strategic leads.

If you are an alcohol coordinator or strategic lead and wish to attend the event please contact james@alcoholacademy.net. Please note places are limited.
